About1

The Big Beaver® has been labeled as an industry-altering device by professionals in the tree service industry.

In a recent article about crane use in a major tree care magazine, the author made a comment to this effect:  Using a crane to remove trees can be both the safest and most dangerous method...Somehow that just does not seem to make sense...It is either the safest or it is not.  The Big Beaver® Removal System can emphatically claim: "It is the safest and LEAST dangerous method for removing a tree; even dead, leaning, bee infested, storm damaged...just name it!"

The Big Beaver® concept of safe and fast tree removal (and trimming) is the most revolutionary invention of the new century for the Tree Care Industry. There is simply nothing like it. It holds the patent for the Anti-Tip-Over-Mechanism-In-Control (ATOMIC) and has verbal approval on other new patents pending. About2

Personal History of Inventor

Ed Coulbourn is the inventor of this revolutionary system of tree removal. Having had the awful experience of an employee death in 1983 Ed believes: SAFETY FIRST, COST TO BE SAFE SECOND! He will be the first to tell you he turned things over to the Lord in 1981 and never looked back. Early in his logging days he developed a new concept in timber harvesting he labeled "On-Site Merchandising" which got him national recognition in the May, 1989 issue of Logger and Lumberman Magazine. Ed believes God has created man in His Image, meaning we like to do a lot of the same things He does...be creative, have fun, and invent stuff. Ed shoots straight and you don't have to worry about his word and desire to run a Christian Business.

History of the Big Beaver® ReTREEver

The first tree taken down by the Big Beaver® in August of 2004 was a maple. Before spending a lot of money developing what is now the patented BeaverHead™, Ed just wanted to be sure the thing would work.  (His backup plan was to set trusses with it using the new jib boom he ordered as his safety net if it didn't work).  Anyway, he hired Mike, a friend and local logging equipment expert, to mount and rig an old Bell 12" thinning shear to the fork attachment on his brand new Manitou 2150. Ed remembers it well: Mike said "Ok, go ahead you crazy nut and try it, but I don't think it will work. Call me if you need me, I'll be at the house." So Mike told Ed there was a big old maple he wanted cut over his nice newly painted white horse fence, and said "try not to tear down my fence". Ed smiled and said "I'll be back in a few minutes". In 20 minutes, Ed drove the machine back up to Mike's shop and hollered at Mike (who had not hardly had time to pour his lemonade): "Fence is fine, got any more trees you want down?" Mike could not believe what he saw. Later, as the dream & design developed in Ed's mind for the BeaverHead™, Mike contributed to building Prototype IV.  And as for that new jib boom...the Big Beaver® worked so good and was so successful, that jib boom never got unpacked.  Even in a spread out and thinly populated area like Dare County, NC (about 30,000 pop.) with 3 or 4 very active tree services, both the first and second year each grossed over $500,000 in sales (about $50,000 of this was log sales and half the number of employees others had...and a lot of downtime performing R&D).  Ed decided not to cut prices common to the area, but to compete at the same level of job prices others used and sometimes even higher.  The Big Beaver® became so popular so fast, it was tough on the local competition.  Often people told the estimator they were not going to get another bid, they wanted that machine to do the job!  Ed remembers one of his favorite comments from customers he heard more than once:  "Heck, it was worth the ticket just to watch it work!"

So what is going on with the Big Beaver® in 2011?

With over 11,000+ trees removed safely and without incident, the Big Beaver® still claims to be the best and safest tree removal system in the world.

The two companies operating these in MD & SC have been amazed when they remove a 4 hour tree in less than 30 minutes; or start a job at 10 AM and by 2:30 have 15 trees in a landscaped yard next to the home and pool DONE! (No brag, just fact).
